We all know and often use terms from the logistics field of expertise, such as transport, spedition or expediting. Some believe that they are interchangeable, but are they? The first time the word logistics was used was in the 10th century, and was considered a military term.

\nA much closer meaning of that word for the world of today would be linked to specific services that started appearing in the 50s, where the need for lasting channels of distribution and transport started to develop quicker and quicker. Logistics operations can include: customer service, demand forecasts, flow of information, supply control, manipulatory action, order implementation, repair and part replacement, manufacturing location, packaging, reimbursements, waste disposal and storage, but do not have to be limited only within those terms. Among those terms, there also spedition\/expediting (part of the logistics operations) and transport (part of spedition\/expediting chain).

\nSpedition\/Expediting<\/strong>

\nTo put it in easy terms, spedition is a series of processes that deal with organization of cargo transportation. On its own, it is a part of the logistics vocabulary, but it does have a narrower meaning \u2013 moving the goods within the economic activity and abiding the law.

\nSpedition deals with:

\n\u2022\tManagement and fulfilling contracts
\n\u2022\tDocument processing
\n\u2022\tOrganization of transport
\n\u2022\tDispatching of parcels

\nTransport is the term with the widest meaning, and is an integral part of spedition operations \u2013 it is a movement of goods from point A to B, for a fee.
\nThere are different types of transport:

\n\u2022\tAir freight
\n\u2022\tBy pipelines
