Local council of Varmia and Mazuria Voivodeship is going to spend more than 29mln Polish Zloty in 2017 for a regional airportin Szymany. The planning includes expanding of the aircraft parking aprons (for around 7lmn PLN) and the parking in front of the terminal by 100 parking spaces. It is also planned to erect a phone telecommunication aerial that would be turned on within the next few months. The council is 100% shareholder of the airport\u2019s partnership company, \u201cWarmia i Mazury.\u201d

\nIn 2016, before the opening of the airport, the estimates oscillated around 30 thousand passengers a year; now we know that the actual number has risen to around 45 thousand passengers, and that means that the airport in Szymany will have to be enlarged, and the enlargement is going to be done step by step. What may be important for quite a few people is that from that airport you will be able to travel to London Stansted and London Luton.

\nThe expansion itself is an interesting fact for the transport industry, since it would mean higher capacity of cargo handling than in the past. It is also possible for more connections in the future, and that would expand the airport\u2019s importance even more.

\nThe local council points out that the expansion is bound to bring new investors, and that is where they see the potential of development for the region; such a scenario is perfectly possible. The experts point out that the development of the airports in general supports the web of business and investment, and that is why it extra financing for the airports is a good idea, even though they \u2013 at first \u2013 do not bring profit.

\nThe airport in Szymany was opened on January 20th, 2016, and at the moment of writing this text that is just a bit more than a year since it was opened. The expansions of the old, post-military base cost around 204mln Polish Zloty, and has been in majority sponsored by the funds from the European Union. <\/p>\n
